EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Guardian of the Tombs of the Kings, a revered figure who has protected the ancient burial site in Jerusalem's Valley of Jehoshaphat for generations. The image showcases the grandeur and historical significance of the tomb complex, believed to be the final resting place for the family of Queen Helene of Adiabene, a powerful and influential queen from the ancient Near East. The photograph was taken circa 1909, and it depicts the Guardian seated at the foot of the monumental staircase leading up to the tomb. The steps, which are 9 meters wide, were originally paved and were the entrance to a forecourt adorned with several ritual baths. Water collected in these baths from a channel system carved into the steps, a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and the importance of purification rituals in ancient Jewish and Hellenistic culture.
