EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking black-and-white photograph, Prince Georges of Greece, the future King George II, stands proudly in his military uniform, exuding an air of regal authority. The image, taken in the early 20th century, captures the prince during his tenure as heir apparent to the Greek throne. Born in Athens on February 13, 1890, Prince Georges was the eldest son of King Constantine I and Queen Sophia of Greece. He was educated in Greece and Germany, and in 1913, he married Princess Cecilie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. The couple had five children together. During the Balkan Wars of 1912-13, Prince Georges served in the Greek army and distinguished himself in battle. In 1917, he was appointed Regent when his father was forced to abdicate, and he assumed the throne himself in 1922 following the defeat of the Greek forces in Asia Minor. However, his reign was short-lived, as he was forced to abdicate in 1924 following a military coup. The photograph showcases Prince Georges' impeccable military bearing and his distinctive moustache, which became a hallmark of his appearance. The Greek flag in the background adds to the sense of national pride and history. Prince Georges went into exile in Italy, where he lived for over two decades. He was eventually invited back to Greece in 1945, following the liberation of the country from the Axis powers during World War II. He was reinstated as king in 1946, but his reign was cut short by his sudden death on March 1, 1947. This photograph is a poignant reminder of Prince Georges' role in Greek history and his dedication to his country and his people. It is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Greek monarchy and the important place it holds in the nation's cultural heritage.
