EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print depicts the iconic scene of the Battle of Thermopylae in Greece, which took place in 480 BCE. The historic event saw a small force of brave warriors from Sparta and Thespiae make a heroic stand against the vast invading Persian army led by King Xerxes. The narrow pass of Thermopylae, where the battle unfolded, is shown in the background, with the mountainous terrain on either side. The Persian forces are seen charging towards the Greek defenders, their shields and spears raised in a determined assault. At the forefront of the Greek line, King Leonidas of Sparta and his 300 Spartans are shown standing firm, their faces resolute and unyielding. Beside them, the 700 Thespians, led by their commander, are also depicted in battle formation, ready to defend their homeland against the Persian onslaught. Despite being vastly outnumbered, the Greeks held their ground for several days, inflicting heavy casualties on the Persians before eventually being outflanked and forced to retreat. The heroic stand of the Spartans and Thespians at Thermopylae became a symbol of courage and determination, and their sacrifice helped to inspire the Greek city-states to unite and eventually defeat the Persian invasion at the Battle of Plataea in 479 BCE. This print, created in 1877, captures the drama and intensity of the Battle of Thermopylae, transporting us back in time to witness one of the most famous moments in ancient history.
