Greece - Palace of King Minos at Knossos

The excavations of Sir Arthur Evans at Knossos revealed a remarkable set of large Minoan storage jars, or pithoi. The compartments in the floor were for grain and produce. An alternative explanation for these compartments is that they were catch basins for the contents of the pithoi if one should break or leak. It would be very hazardous to store grain or produce in the floor of a magazine, the main purpose of which was to hold giant vases of liquids

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the enigmatic Palace of King Minos at Knossos in Crete, a symbol of the rich cultural heritage of ancient Greece. The Palace, a remarkable architectural feat of the Minoan civilization, was brought to light through the groundbreaking excavations led by Sir Arthur Evans in the early 20th century. The image reveals a set of large, decorated Minoan storage jars, or pithoi, discovered during the excavations. The intricate designs adorning these jars are a testament to the advanced craftsmanship and artistic skills of the Minoans. The compartments in the palace's floor, where these jars were found, were initially believed to serve as storage spaces for grain and produce. However, an alternative theory suggests that they may have functioned as catch basins to contain any spills or leaks from the pithoi. The presence of these giant vases in the palace's magazines, which were primarily designed to hold liquids, raises intriguing questions about the daily life and logistical organization of the Minoan civilization. The Palace of King Minos at Knossos, with its labyrinthine corridors and impressive architectural features, continues to fascinate historians and archaeologists, offering a window into the fascinating history of ancient Crete.
