Gideon's Army Prepared for Battle: A Historical Moment from the Old Testament (Judges 7:16-20) This evocative image captures the pivotal moment in the biblical account of Gideon, the fifth judge of Israel, preparing his small but determined army for battle against the Midianite opponents. In this scene, Gideon, a humble and devout man, is seen equipping his soldiers with an unconventional yet effective weapon: lamps covered with pitchers. The Midianites, a powerful and numerous enemy, had been oppressing the Israelites for several years. Desperate for deliverance, the Israelites turned to Gideon, who was initially hesitant to lead them into battle due to his doubts about his own abilities and the size of his army. However, after receiving a divine sign from God, Gideon rallied his troops and set out to confront the Midianites. To even the odds, Gideon devised a clever strategy. He divided his army into three companies, each with a unique role in the battle. Once the enemy was in pursuit, Gideon's central company would attack from the rear, catching the Midianites off guard. The Midianites, upon seeing the seemingly endless ranks of torches, would be frightened and disorganized, allowing Gideon's forces to capitalize on their confusion and defeat them.
