"George Robinson, also known as 'Friendly George' or 'Black George,' is depicted in this powerful photograph from the 1830s as he embarked on a mission of conciliation with the Indigenous Tasmanian people. Robinson, an Englishman, served as the Protector of Aborigines in Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania) during a time of great conflict between the colonizing British and the Indigenous Tasmanian peoples.
