EDITORS COMMENTS
This cig card print features a dashing portrait of George IV of England, born on August 12, 1762, and reigning from 1820 until his death in 1830. George, the Prince of Wales from 1811 until his accession, was the eldest surviving son of King George III and Queen Charlotte. George's early life was marked by a notorious reputation for extravagance and womanizing. He married Princess Caroline of Brunswick in 1795, but their marriage was unhappy, and they eventually separated. George's infidelities led to numerous illegitimate children, and his relationship with his wife deteriorated further when she gave birth to a daughter, Charlotte, out of wedlock in 1796. Despite his personal scandals, George's political acumen and diplomatic skills proved invaluable during his father's final years. When George III became mentally ill, George acted as regent, effectively ruling the country. He worked to improve Anglo-French relations, which had been strained due to the French Revolution. Upon his father's death, George ascended to the throne, but his reign was marked by controversy. His extravagant lifestyle and attempts to influence Parliament led to public disapproval. George's relationship with his wife, who had returned to England, remained strained, and they lived apart. Despite these challenges, George's reign saw significant cultural developments, including the patronage of artists and architects. He commissioned Sir John Soane to rebuild St. James's Palace and commissioned Sir Thomas Lawrence to paint his official portrait. This cig card print captures George IV in his prime, with a confident and dashing expression. The intricate detail of the print showcases the skill of the engraver and the high-quality production of the cig card. This historical artifact offers a glimpse into the life and reign of a complex and intriguing monarch.
