1660 1698 1714 1727 Elector Fursten Hanover Reigned

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures George I, the King of England from 1714 to 1727 and the Elector of Hanover from 1698, in regal splendor. Born on October 28, 1660, George was the youngest son of Ernest Augustus, Elector of Brunswick-Lüneburg, and Sophia of the Palatinate. He ascended to the British throne at the age of 54 following the death of Queen Anne, who had no surviving children. George's election as Elector of Hanover in 1698 marked the beginning of the House of Hanover's reign in Britain, making him the first German-born monarch of England. George I's reign was marked by political instability and the ongoing War of the Spanish Succession. He faced opposition from the Jacobites, who sought to restore the deposed Stuart dynasty. In an effort to strengthen his position, George allied with France, which led to the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. This treaty ended the War of the Spanish Succession and secured the Hanoverian succession in Britain. Despite his military successes, George's reign was not without controversy. He was criticized for his German ways and his preference for his Hanoverian advisors over British ones. George's poor health and his son's rebellion further weakened his position, leading to his eventual death on June 11, 1727. This portrait, likely taken during George's reign, showcases his regal presence and the grandeur of the British monarchy. The King is depicted wearing the Order of the Garter, a symbol of his position as monarch, and holds a scepter and orb in his hands. The elaborate background and ornate frame further emphasize the majesty of the monarch. George I's reign may have been marked by instability, but this portrait stands as a testament to his regal status and the enduring power of the British monarchy.
