Born on March 2, 1761, in Edinburgh, Scotland, Baird's intellectual pursuits began at an early age. He was educated at the University of Edinburgh and later at the University of Glasgow, where he studied theology and Greek, Hebrew, and Latin. Baird's scholarly career began in 1785 when he was appointed as a professor of Greek at the University of Edinburgh. He later served as the Principal of the Theological Hall in Edinburgh (1797-1803) and the Professor of Divinity at the University of Edinburgh (1803-1840). Throughout his career, Baird published numerous works on various theological and biblical subjects, including "A Commentary on the Epistles of St. Paul to the Galatians and Ephesians" and "A Dissertation on the Authenticity of the Epistle to the Hebrews." Baird was also an advocate for education and played a significant role in the establishment of the Edinburgh Academy in 1823. He believed that education was essential for the betterment of society and worked tirelessly to improve the educational opportunities available to the people of Scotland.
