Byron's connection to Greece began in 1809 when he joined the Greek struggle for independence from the Ottoman Empire. He arrived in Missolonghi in 1823, intending to fight alongside the Greeks and help them gain their freedom. However, his involvement was short-lived, as he contracted a fever and died in Missolonghi in April 1824, at the age of 36. The poet's commitment to the Greek cause was deeply felt, and he wrote extensively about it in his works, most notably in his famous poem "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage," where he famously declared, "I have wandered lonely as a cloud— I travelled on a pilgrimage to my holy war."
