EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the distinguished visage of General Sir John Low (1788-1880), a veteran military and diplomatic figure in the East India Company's service. Born in Scotland, Low joined the East India Company's military in 1803, embarking on a career that would span over five decades and take him to the far reaches of the British Empire in India. Throughout his military service, Low proved himself to be a capable and dedicated officer, rising through the ranks to become a Major-General in 1861. In recognition of his achievements, he was made a Knight Commander of the Bath (KCB) in 1862. But Low's service to the East India Company was not limited to the military sphere. He also played a significant role in diplomacy, serving as the British Resident in the princely state of Mysore from 1863 to 1868. In this capacity, he helped to maintain peace and stability in the region, and was instrumental in negotiating treaties and alliances with local rulers. In 1873, Low was further honored with the title of Knight Grand Cross of the Star of India (GCSI), one of the highest distinctions bestowed upon British subjects in India. The knighthoods were a testament to Low's dedication, leadership, and diplomatic skills, which served the East India Company and the British Empire in India for over five decades. This photograph, taken in later life, captures the wisdom and gravitas of a man who had seen much and accomplished much in his long and distinguished career. Sir John Low's legacy as a military and diplomatic leader in India continues to be remembered and celebrated in the annals of British colonial history.
