1807 1882 Garibaldi Giuseppe Patriot

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the iconic figure of Giuseppe Garibaldi, the Italian patriot and military leader who played a pivotal role in the Italian Unification in the mid-19th century. Taken in 1882, the image shows Garibaldi in his later years, with a distinguished white beard and piercing eyes that seem to convey a sense of determination and resilience. Born in Nice, then part of the Kingdom of Sardinia, in 1807, Garibaldi became a naval officer in the Brazilian Navy before returning to Europe in 1834 to join the Carbonari, a secret society dedicated to the cause of Italian independence. He gained fame for leading the Expedition of the Thousand, a volunteer army that successfully captured the southern Italian city of Naples in 1860, paving the way for the unification of Italy under the House of Savoy. Despite his military triumphs, Garibaldi remained a controversial figure throughout his life. He was known for his radical political views and his support for socialist and anarchist ideals, which put him at odds with many of the conservative forces that came to power in Italy after the unification. He also had a complex personal life, with multiple marriages and relationships, including a famous liaison with the French poet and anarchist Annette Leconte de Lisle. This photograph, taken by the Italian photographer Brog (also known as Giuseppe Brogni), offers a glimpse into the later years of a man who remains a symbol of Italian patriotism and revolutionary spirit. Garibaldi's legacy continues to inspire generations of Italians and Europeans, and his image remains a powerful reminder of the struggles and sacrifices that shaped the modern Italian nation.
