EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the Garibaldi Invasion Fleet, also known as the "Thousand," as it sets sail from Quarto, Sicily, in 1860. The fleet, led by Giuseppe Garibaldi, a Italian patriot and military leader, was on a mission to invade the Italian mainland and bring about the unification of Italy under a single government. The historical event marked a turning point in Italian history, as the Italian states were then ruled by various foreign powers and the papal states. Garibaldi and his volunteers, mostly made up of Italian expatriates and volunteers from other European countries, aimed to overthrow the Austrian and Bourbon rule and establish a unified Italian state. The fleet, carrying over a thousand men, set sail from Quarto on May 6, 1860, and arrived at Marsala, Sicily, on May 11. From there, they continued their journey to the Italian mainland, landing at Marsala on May 15. The invasion was met with initial success, as the local population welcomed the invaders with open arms. However, the campaign faced several challenges, including logistical difficulties and resistance from the Austrian and Bourbon forces. Despite these challenges, Garibaldi's troops continued their march towards the capital, Rome, and eventually reached Naples on September 7, 1860. The city surrendered to the invaders, and Garibaldi was hailed as a hero. The unification of Italy was completed in 1870, when Rome was finally annexed to the new Italian state. This print is a testament to the bravery and determination of Garibaldi and his volunteers, who risked their lives to bring about the unification of Italy. It is an important historical document that captures a pivotal moment in Italian history and the struggle for Italian independence.
