Lucena, a vibrant city in the Philippines, is steeped in history and art. Once the residence of Mariano Alvarez de Castro (1749-1810), a Spanish military officer and governor, the city has a rich colonial past. One of its most notable landmarks is the half-length Virgin Standing with Child, a religious sculpture created by Leopoldo O'Donnell and Joris in 1809. The bustling port of a hub of transportation, with colorful jeepneys and trishaws lining the docks. A nod to the past, outrigger boats can still be seen bobbing in the water, harkening back to the city's maritime history. But Lucena's connection to the arts extends beyond its sculptures. In 1837, Vasco da Lucena, a Portuguese painter, arrived in the city and gave Charles Bold, a local artist, his first masterpiece. This exchange marked the beginning of a new era in Lucena's artistic community, one that continues to thrive today.
