In the 19th century, the blacksmith and horse were inseparable companions. The rhythmic clang of the hammer on an anvil echoed through the air as a skilled blacksmith crafted a horseshoe with precision. A coloured engraving from that era captures this timeless scene, showcasing the dedication and craftsmanship of these skilled artisans. One such blacksmith can be seen in his forge, sweat glistening on his brow as he carefully shapes a shoe for a Metropolitan Police horse. His expertise ensures that every hoof is protected and ready to serve its duty on the bustling streets of London. But not all horses wore shoes solely for work purposes. In fact, even honeymoon taxis had their fair share of equine elegance. W. H Robinson's whimsical illustration depicts a newlywed couple riding in style, with their trusty steed adorned with ornate horseshoes – symbols of good luck and prosperity for their journey ahead. Across the Atlantic, another iconic image emerged - "The Village Blacksmith. " This line engraving from 1862 portrays an American blacksmith at work in his shop, surrounded by tools and glowing embers. It serves as a testament to hard work and resilience during challenging times. Speaking of challenges, Scotland after Culloden was marked by upheaval and change. Yet amidst it all, horses remained steadfast companions to those who relied on them for transportation or sport. "The Winning Jockey" captures one such moment of triumph as jockeys race towards victory astride their trusted mounts. Horseshoes also found themselves adorning architectural marvels like Windsor Castle's Horseshoe Cloister during the Victorian period. These intricate designs showcased both beauty and functionality – protecting hooves while adding regal charm to royal surroundings. Not limited to art or castles alone, horseshoes made appearances in unexpected places too.
