Elijah: A Visionary Leader and Symbol of Strength Elijah Muhammad, an influential African American leader, dedicated his life to the Nation of Islam. Born in 1897 and passing away in 1975, he left a lasting impact on the civil rights movement. Just as Raphael's Transfiguration painting from 1517 depicts Jesus surrounded by Moses and Elijah, Elijah Muhammad stood as a guiding light for many.
