In the early 1900s, the bustling streets of Dublin, Ireland were filled with the sights and sounds of drays. These magnificent horse-drawn wagons played a crucial role in transporting goods across the city. One iconic location where these drays could be found was at the Cooperage yard of Guinness Brewery. As black and white photographs from that era show, these sturdy vehicles lined up outside the brewery, ready to load barrels upon barrels of Guinness stout. The Dublin Guinness Brewery itself was a sight to behold during this time period. Its grand buildings stood tall, exuding an air of history and tradition. The drays added to this scene, bringing life and movement to the otherwise static surroundings. Not far from there, on Surrey Street, another type of dray made its presence known. J. G. Graves Ltd. , an esteemed department store formerly housed in what was once a music hall but later transformed into a public library, utilized these wagons for their deliveries. Tooley Street also witnessed its fair share passing through its busy thoroughfare. An engraving captures this moment perfectly - horses pulling heavy loads while people go about their daily business in Victorian-era London. Across the Atlantic Ocean in America's Nantucket Island and Chicago's Clark Street during the 1870s, similar scenes unfolded as drays traversed their respective cities' streets. Whether it was twine manufacturers or Bass Shires being transported with pride by Mr Peter Riseborough himself leading them around town - these images showcase how vital they were for commerce back then. As we look back on these snapshots from history captured by pen and pencil drawings or black-and-white photographs taken over a century ago, we are reminded of how much has changed since then. Yet amidst all that change remains an appreciation for those hardworking horses who pulled those mighty drays through cobblestone streets - forever etched in our memories as symbols of strength and perseverance.
