Daoism, also known as Taoism, is an ancient Chinese philosophy and religion that emphasizes living in harmony with the Dao, or the Way. It encompasses a wide range of beliefs and practices, including rituals, meditation, and the worship of various deities. In traditional Chinese art, we can see depictions of important figures in Daoist mythology. The Kitchen-God is one such figure who is believed to watch over households and report on their behavior to higher powers. Created in 1922 by an unknown artist, this artwork captures the essence of this deity's role in domestic life. Another fascinating artwork from 1922 portrays The Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea. These legendary beings are revered for their immortality and supernatural abilities. Their depiction here by an unknown creator showcases their unique personalities and attributes. Guan Yu is another prominent figure in Daoist tradition depicted around 1700 by an anonymous artist. He was a general during China's Three Kingdoms period but later became worshipped as a god associated with loyalty and righteousness. Tou Mu, Goddess of the North Star, created in 1922 by an unknown artist holds significant importance within Daoism as she governs destiny and protects against evil spirits. This captivating artwork beautifully represents her divine presence. Chang Tao-Ling was a historical figure considered the founder of religious Daoism during the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220 CE). A piece from 1922 depicts him surrounded by celestial beings; its creator remains unknown. The Taoist Triad artwork from 1922 shows three important deities: Wen Chang (God of Literature), Kuei Hsing (God of Examinations), and Chu I (God of Justice). These gods were worshipped for guidance in education pursuits and moral conduct.
