In the year 1650, the world was a vastly different place. The Age of Enlightenment was just beginning to take hold, leading to advancements in science, philosophy, and art. Meanwhile, political tensions were high as various European powers vied for control over colonies and territories around the globe. In England, King Charles I had been executed just a few years earlier during the English Civil War, leading to a period of instability and uncertainty. Across the Atlantic Ocean, European settlers were establishing colonies in North America that would eventually grow into powerful nations. In Asia, the Ming Dynasty was coming to an end in China while Japan was experiencing a period of isolationism under the Tokugawa shogunate. In Africa, empires like the Songhai and Kongo were flourishing while European traders began establishing footholds along the coast.
