Behanzin, the valiant King of Dahomey, once ruled with regal grace and power. In the vibrant lithograph "Les Rois en Exil. Presentations Royales: Amis, tous amis." (1906), we see Behanzin in exile, a shadow of his former self, yet the memory of his battles against the French during the Franco-Dahomean Wars (1890-1892) still echoes. The coloured engravings of the Battles of Dogba and Akpa (1892) depict the fierce resistance of Behanzin's army, their determination etched in every line. In "King Behanzin of Dahomey" (1893), the artist F Meaulle captures the King's regal bearing, a testament to his proud spirit. Exiled and dethroned, Behanzin and his wives are shown in another lithograph, a poignant reminder of the human cost of war. The landing of French forces at Cotonou harbour during the Dahomey War (1892) marked the beginning of the end for Behanzin's reign. Yet, the legacy of this African king continues to inspire, his story a testament to courage and resilience.
