EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the French Navy Destroyer, Cyclone, in action during World War II. The Cyclone, a Le Fantasque-class destroyer, was one of the most advanced warships of its time, commissioned into the French Navy in 1937. With a top speed of over 36 knots, it was a formidable force on the high seas. During the early years of the war, the Cyclone saw action in the English Channel and the Mediterranean Sea, engaging in numerous battles against German U-boats and surface raiders. In one notable engagement, on July 13, 1940, the Cyclone and several other French destroyers successfully repelled an Italian naval force off the coast of Tunisia. The Cyclone's career in the French Navy came to an end on November 27, 1942, when it was scuttled in Toulon harbor to prevent its capture by the Germans. The ship was later raised and repaired, and served in the French Navy until its decommissioning in 1967. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the bravery and determination of the French Navy during World War II. The Cyclone and its crew played a crucial role in defending France's interests and protecting its people during a time of great turmoil and uncertainty. The image of the ship cutting through the waves, with its guns trained and ready, is a testament to the indomitable spirit of the French military and the enduring legacy of the French Navy.
