EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures a moment in time from the 15th century, showcasing the French bowmen in their meticulously detailed attire, as they prepare for battle. Dating back to around 1460, these archers were an essential component of the French military during the Late Middle Ages. Their expertise with the longbow made them formidable opponents on the battlefield. The French bowmen are depicted here wearing the traditional armor and clothing of the era. Their armor, made of iron or steel, includes gorgets, bracers, and vambraces, designed to protect the vital areas of their bodies. Over their armor, they wear woolen tunics, often adorned with heraldic devices, and linen surcoats, which could be emblazoned with the emblems of their lord or regiment. The bowmen also wear woolen hose, which are held up by garters, and high leather boots. Their longbows, the most distinctive feature of these soldiers, are slung over their shoulders. These powerful weapons, made from a single piece of yew wood, could shoot arrows up to 200 yards, making them an effective tool for both offense and defense. The quivers at their sides hold an ample supply of arrows, ensuring they were well-equipped for prolonged engagements. This historical photograph, from the extensive collection of Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the art of archery was a crucial skill for survival and success on the battlefield.
