EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a moment of unity and camaraderie between French and Serbian allies during the final stages of the First World War. The image was taken in Salonika, Greece, in 1918, and features Vojvoda Petar Bojovic (1858-1945), Field Marshal of the Serbian Army, on the left, and an unidentified French General on the right. Both men are dressed in their full military regalia, with Bojovic wearing the distinctive uniform of the Serbian Army, complete with the Order of the White Eagle on his chest. The French General wears the blue tunic and red kepi of the French Army. The First Balkan War in 1912 had seen Serbia expand its borders, but the country was still under threat from the Central Powers during the First World War. In 1915, Serbia was invaded by the Austro-Hungarian and Bulgarian armies, and the Serbian Army was forced to retreat. Thousands of Serbian soldiers and civilians were killed or captured, and many more were forced to flee the country. The Allied Powers, including France, came to the aid of Serbia, and in 1916, an Allied army was formed in Salonika, Greece, to launch an offensive against the Central Powers. The photograph shows Bojovic and the French General standing together, a symbol of the strong alliance between the two countries during this critical period of the war. The image serves as a reminder of the important role played by the Balkan armies in the First World War and the unity that existed between the Allied Powers in their fight against the Central Powers.
