EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait depicts Frederick William, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel (1771-1815), a veteran German military leader who faced the French in numerous wars from 1789 onwards. The painting, created around 1813-1815, captures the Duke in the prime of his military career. Having briefly inherited the Duchy of Brunswick in 1806, he was forced to relinquish it when the French seized the territory. In response, he formed the Brunswick Corps, wearing black in mourning for their occupied homeland. When hostilities resumed in 1809, the Duke regained control of his Duchy. In 1815, as a Major-General, he led a fresh contingent in the Hundred Days campaign against Napoleon. Tragically, he was killed by a gunshot at the Battle of Quatre Bras on 16th June, two days before the Battle of Waterloo. The Duke's unwavering commitment to his people and his country is evident in this powerful portrait, a poignant reminder of his significant role in German and European military history.
