Frankfurt, Germany - The Romer

The Romer (German for " Roman" ) is a medieval building in Frankfurt am Main and one of the citys most important landmarks. It has been the city hall (Rathaus) for 600 years. The Haus Romer is actually the middle building of a set of three located in the Romerberg (a plaza). The Romer merchant family sold it together with a second building, the Goldener Schwan (Golden Swan), to the Frankfurt city council in 1405

EDITORS COMMENTS
Frankfurt am Main's Romer: A Historic Gem in Germany's Financial Hub The Romer, located in the heart of Frankfurt am Main, Germany, stands as a proud testament to the city's rich history. This medieval building, with its distinctive red-roofed facade, has served as Frankfurt's city hall (Rathaus) for over six centuries. The Haus Romer is the middle building in a set of three structures, which also includes the Goldener Schwan (Golden Swan), in the Romerberg plaza. The Romer merchant family sold the buildings to the Frankfurt city council in 1405. Over the centuries, the Romer has been the seat of power and the stage for significant historical events. Its grand halls have hosted coronations, royal meetings, and city council sessions. The Romer's architectural beauty is a blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles, with intricate details adorning its exterior. The building's timber-framed structure is a common feature of medieval German architecture. The Romer's iconic status is further emphasized by its location in the Romerberg, a plaza that is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Despite its historical significance, the Romer remains a vibrant part of Frankfurt's modern life. It is a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from around the world who come to marvel at this architectural marvel and learn about Frankfurt's rich history. The Romer's halls are also used for various cultural events, making it a hub of activity in the city. This photograph captures the Romer's timeless beauty, transporting us back in time to an era of grandeur and history. The golden hues of the buildings in the set, against the clear blue sky, create a stunning visual contrast. The Romer's enduring presence in Frankfurt's skyline is a reminder of the city's rich history and its commitment to preserving its heritage for future generations.
