The image, taken in 1894, depicts a crowd of pilgrims gathered at the grotto, where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to Bernadette Soubirous in 1859. Bernadette, a young peasant girl from Lourdes, reported experiencing sixteen apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary between February 11 and July 16, 1858. During these apparitions, Bernadette described the Virgin Mary as a beautiful lady wearing a white dress with a blue sash and a yellow rose on each foot. She instructed Bernadette to drink from a spring of water located near the grotto, which is now known as the Lourdes Sanctuary.
