Florence Nightingale visiting the Hut Hospitals, at Balaclav
Born in Italy in 1820, she moved to England with her wealthy family and was educated at home by her father. Although it was not deemed suitable for ladies of Florences social standing to become nurses, she believed that it was Gods chosen path for her. She trained in Kaiserswerth, near Dusseldorf and then returned to England to take a post at a Harley Street surgery. Florence Nightingale was sent along with 38 nurses to the Barrack Hospital in Scutari to assist with medical support. As she cared for the troops she gained much repect, writing letters home on the soldiers behalf and fighting to improve the sanitary conditions of the field hospitals. When Florence returned from the Crimea she received a heros welcome. She published two books about her opinions on hospital reforms and campaigned for better quality nursing training until her death in August 1910

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), the legendary English nurse and social reformer, is depicted visiting the Hut Hospitals at Balaclava during the Crimean War. Born into an Italian-British family of wealth and privilege, Nightingale defied societal norms and felt called by God to serve as a nurse. She received her training in Kaiserswerth, Germany, and returned to England to work at a Harley Street surgery. In 1855, Nightingale and 38 nurses were sent to the Barrack Hospital in Scutari to offer medical support to the troops. Amidst the chaos and squalor of the field hospitals, she gained the respect of the soldiers by writing letters home on their behalf and tirelessly advocating for improved sanitary conditions. Upon her return from the Crimea, Nightingale was hailed as a heroine. She published two influential books, "Notes on Nursing: What It Is and What It Is Not" and "Notes on Hospitals," outlining her opinions on hospital reforms and advocating for better quality nursing training. Nightingale's unwavering dedication to improving healthcare and her groundbreaking work as a nurse continue to inspire and influence the medical profession to this day. This photograph captures a poignant moment in the life of this remarkable woman, as she pays a visit to the Hut Hospitals at Balaclava, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to caring for those in need.
