Two women scared by a rat
Two women in the town of Hamelin in Lower Saxony, Germany, being scared by one of the rats which were plaguing the townsfolk in 1284. The event inspired the legend of the Pied Piper who removed the rats by playing his musical instrument but when the townsfolk refused to pay him, he lured away most of their children. From " The Pied Piper of Hamelin" by Robert Browning, illustrated by Kate Greenaway, published by George Routledge & Sons, London, Glasgow, Manchester and New York in 1888

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment frozen in time, depicting two women from the town of Hamelin in Lower Saxony, Germany. Their expressions of sheer terror reveal the presence of a rat, one of many that plagued their community back in 1284. Little did they know that this event would go on to inspire the legendary tale of the Pied Piper. According to folklore, when faced with an infestation beyond control, the townsfolk sought help from a mysterious musician known as the Pied Piper. With his enchanting melodies resonating through his musical instrument, he miraculously led all the rats away from Hamelin. However, greed and ingratitude prevailed among those who had been saved. The townspeople refused to pay their savior for his services rendered. In retaliation and driven by vengeance, he lured away most of their children forever. This evocative image transports us back to that fateful time and reminds us of how legends are born out of real-life events. It serves as a visual reminder not only of our capacity for fear but also our tendency towards ungratefulness and its consequences. Taken from Robert Browning's renowned poem "The Pied Piper of Hamelin" this illustration by Kate Greenaway brings life to an age-old story that continues to captivate audiences even today.
