ZIN47081 Detail of the outside of an Attic black-figure cup depicting a Greek sailing ship, c.520 BC (pottery) by Nikosthenes, (fl.540-510 BC); Louvre, Paris, France; (add.info.: The cup is decorated with two warships on each side. On each ship, a straight stem painted with an eye for good luck stands above the prow, whose ram is shaped like a boars head. The helmsman is standing keeping a lookout. The coxswain is standing at the stern, which is elegantly curved like a swans neck. The ladders are fastened horizontally. The ships are being followed by dolphins. Mermaids painted on the rinceaux near the handles complete the decoration. The artist perhaps intended a reference to the story of Ulysses and the mermaids from Homers Odyssey.); eHeinrich Zinram Photography Archive; Greek, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing detail of the outside of an Attic black-figure cup, dating back to around 520 BC. Crafted by the renowned Greek potter Nikosthenes, this masterpiece is now housed in the Louvre Museum in Paris, France. The cup's exterior is adorned with intricate depictions of two Greek warships sailing through turbulent waters. Each ship features a straight stem painted with an eye symbolizing good luck and protection. The prow of these vessels takes on the shape of a boar's head, adding a fierce touch to their appearance. A vigilant helmsman stands at attention, keeping watch over the vast sea ahead. Meanwhile, at the stern, we find the coxswain standing proudly amidst elegantly curved lines reminiscent of a swan's graceful neck. Horizontally fastened ladders adorn both ships while dolphins gracefully trail behind them. Adding further allure to this artwork are mermaids painted near the handles on delicate rinceaux patterns. This subtle addition hints at Ulysses' legendary encounter with enchanting mermaids during his epic journey described in Homer's Odyssey. Through this photograph captured by A© Heinrich Zinram from Fine Art Finder, we are transported back in time to witness not only exquisite craftsmanship but also tales and myths that have shaped ancient Greek culture for centuries.
