EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the somber scene of the "Death of St. Columba" from The Trias Thaumaturga, or Three Wonder-Working Saints of Ireland, by Mary Cusack. Published in the late 1890s, this lithograph showcases the work of an Irish School artist from the 19th century. In this image, we witness a moment filled with mourning and grief as St. Columba's life comes to an end. Born in County Donegal in 521, he later became Abbot of Iona before passing away there in 597. Known as the Apostle of Caledonia, St. Columba founded a monastery at Iona around 565. The engraving beautifully depicts a Celtic missionary surrounded by his followers who are overcome with sorrow at their beloved saint's departure from this world. The intricate details capture every emotion etched on their faces as they bid farewell to their spiritual leader. This print is part of The Stapleton Collection and belongs to a private collection today. Its historical significance lies not only in its portrayal of an important figure like St. Columba but also in its representation of Irish culture and heritage. As we gaze upon this poignant image, we are reminded of the profound impact that saints like St. Columba had on society during their time and continue to have through history.
