The 1st and 2nd Indian Cavalry Divisions were sent to France in November 1914 and remained on the Western Front until March 1918. That month they were transferred to Palestine to take part in the offensive against the Turks. During their period of duty in France the sowars of both divisions sometimes served in the trenches as infantry.
