EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white illustration, titled "The last stand of De Montfort at Evesham" transports us back to a significant moment in British history. Created by Richard Caton Woodville II in the early 20th century, this lithograph captures the intensity and tragedy of the Battle of Evesham on August 4th, 1265. In the center of the image stands Simon de Montfort, the valiant 6th Earl of Leicester. With his sword raised high above his head, he leads his troops fearlessly into battle against overwhelming odds. The chaos and violence surrounding him are palpable as soldiers clash with swords and shields while horses charge through clouds of dust. Woodville's attention to detail is remarkable; every soldier's face reflects determination or despair as they fight for their cause. We witness both triumph and tragedy within this scene - moments frozen in time that tell a story far beyond words. Sadly, this would be De Montfort's final stand. As history tells us, he was ultimately struck down during this fateful battle. His death marked not only an end to his own life but also to a chapter in English history known as the Second Barons' War. Preserved within private collections today, this powerful engraving serves as a reminder of bravery amidst adversity and honors those who fought bravely for their beliefs centuries ago.
