EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a mesmerizing detail from the fresco "Procris impaled by the never erring javelin, Cephalus running towards her and Aurora and Titone on a chariot pulled by four horses" painted by Baldassarre Peruzzi in 1517-18. Located in the Villa Farnesina in Rome, Italy, this artwork is part of The Hall of Perspectives, featuring mythological scenes inspired by Ovid's Metamorphoses. In this particular scene, we witness Procris lying on the ground with a lance piercing her chest while Cephalus desperately runs towards her. On the left side of the image, Aurora and Titone ride on a magnificent chariot drawn by four powerful horses. Interestingly, it is believed that Aurora played a role in Procris' tragic fate as she instilled jealousy within her towards Cephalus. Adding to the enchantment of this composition is Venus (or perhaps Hesperus) flying ahead of the chariot while holding a star. This intricate detail showcases Peruzzi's mastery in capturing both beauty and tragedy within his frescoes. The delicate brushwork and vibrant colors bring life to these mythical characters frozen in time. As you gaze at this photo print, allow yourself to be transported into an ancient world where gods meddle with mortal affairs and love becomes entangled with jealousy and betrayal.
