Do You Know: Why are some windows bricked-up in old houses? (colour litho)

8668112 Do You Know: Why are some windows bricked-up in old houses? (colour litho) by English School, (20th century); Private Collection; (add.info.: Why are some windows bricked-up in old houses? During the reign of William III it was found necessary to make good a serious deficiency in currency arising from clipped and defaced coins, and a window tax was levied on all houses containing more than six windows. This tax was imposed in 1695, and revenue derived the first year amounted to over a million pounds. Owing to six increases, property owners, whose houses contained a large number of windows, had some bricked up as a protest. The tax was reduced in 1823, and repealed on 24 July 1851, to be replaced by a tax on inhabited houses. EDITORS COMMENTS
This colour lithograph print titled "Do You Know: Why are some windows bricked-up in old houses?" by the English School from the 20th century offers a fascinating glimpse into historical taxation practices. The image depicts a scene where property owners, faced with a window tax imposed during the reign of William III in 1695, resorted to bricking up excess windows as a form of protest. The window tax was levied on houses with more than six windows to make up for currency deficiencies caused by clipped and defaced coins. The revenue generated from this tax exceeded one million pounds in its first year. As the tax increased over time, homeowners took drastic measures to reduce their burden by blocking off unnecessary windows. Intriguingly, this illustration was part of a set of 50 "Do You Know?" cigarette cards issued by Carreras in 1939, offering snippets of knowledge on various topics. Through this artwork, viewers are not only treated to an aesthetically pleasing visual but also gain insight into an obscure aspect of history that sheds light on past economic policies and societal responses.
