EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable Christian Lacquer Shrine (Seigan) from the 18th century. The shrine, originating from the Momoyama Period, is a true masterpiece of artistry and devotion. Standing at a height of 48.7 cm, this rectangular shrine features an architectural pediment adorned with intricate designs in cut and inlaid mother-of-pearl, gold, and silver hiramaki-e on a striking black background. The attention to detail is awe-inspiring; the sides are embellished with fuyo patterns and scrolling vines while the center of the pediment boasts a radiant sun-burst halo. At its heart lies the monogram of the Society of Jesus IHS (Jesu Hominum Salvator), crowned by a cross above three crucifixion nails discreetly concealed within black lacquer. Turning our gaze to the back panel reveals an exquisite painting depicting The Crucifixion with Mary, Saint John the Evangelist, and other figures surrounding Jesus Christ. This profound scene is signed by Joseph Almorin as "pinx" (painter) along with an inscription that reads "A devocion del Teniente Coronel Don Manuel Munoz Ano de 1778" adding historical significance to this sacred artwork. Although lacking doors today, this lacquer shrine remains an extraordinary testament to both Portuguese and Japanese influences on Christianity during that era. Its portable nature suggests it was likely used for private worship or carried during religious processions. Thanks to Bridgeman Images' photographical expertise captured in this print, we can now appreciate every intricate detail of this exceptional piece without limitations or boundaries imposed by time or distance.
