EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "A Steam Train on the Ottoman Railway, 1859" by David Hall McKewan. The artwork, created with watercolor and pencil heightened with bodycolor, measures 64.77x122.56 cm and is currently held in a private collection. The historical significance of this piece lies not only in its artistic merit but also in its connection to Thomas Russell Crampton, a renowned railway engineer. Crampton played a vital role as a consultant during the construction of the Ottoman railways in the 1850s. His expertise earned him great recognition, including a gold medal at the Great Exhibition in 1851 for his locomotive named The Liverpool. The Ottoman Railway Company was established in 1856 and began operations when the first section was completed in October 1858. Kemer Station, located in Izmir, served as the starting point for this pioneering railway network that eventually extended from Smyrna (Izmir) to Egridir. This particular image captures an early moment along this historic route where steam trains transported figs from fertile plains to southeastern Izmir. It symbolizes progress and innovation as it represents Anatolia's first-ever railway line. Although building work continued until 1912 under various ownerships, including acquisition by the Republic of Turkey in 1935, this photograph immortalizes one of Turkey's oldest railway stations and celebrates an important milestone in transportation history.
