In the spring of 451 Attila, King of the Huns, crossed the Rhine into Belgic Gaul, the cities of which were sacked by his army. But the Franks, like the Goths, rose to aid in stemming the tide of an invasion mere savage and brutal than any experienced before. In the great and decisive battle of Chalons the Franks, under their king, Meroveus, fought as allies in the ranks of the victorious Roman army, which was led by Aetius.
