1769 1796 Colleagues Rocks Marceau

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print depicts French military officer, François Sulpice Marceau-Desgraviers (1769-1796), in the prime of his military career. Marceau-Desgraviers, a native of Dijon, France, rose through the ranks of the French military during the late 18th century, earning a reputation as a brave and capable commander. The image captures Marceau-Desgraviers in his full military regalia, including a blue military coat with red lapels and white hat adorned with a rosette. Surrounded by his colleagues, the group is depicted standing on a rocky outcropping, overlooking a scenic landscape. The rugged terrain and natural beauty of the setting serve as a stark contrast to the formal uniforms and disciplined posture of the soldiers. Marceau-Desgraviers' career in the French military began in 1788, when he joined the Royal-Roussillon Infantry Regiment. He quickly distinguished himself in battle, and was promoted to the rank of captain in 1791. In 1792, he was appointed as the commander of the 1st Battalion of the 2nd Regiment of Volunteers of the Haute-Marne. Marceau-Desgraviers' most famous command came during the French Revolution, when he led his troops in the defense of Strasbourg against the advancing Prussian army in 1793. Despite being outnumbered, Marceau-Desgraviers and his men held the city for several days before being forced to retreat. Marceau-Desgraviers was mortally wounded during the retreat, and died on the battlefield at the age of 27. This print offers a glimpse into the life of a young and ambitious military officer during a pivotal moment in French history. The image captures the spirit of the French military during the late 18th century, as well as the rugged terrain and natural beauty of the French countryside.
