EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant photograph, Exiled King Michael I of Romania (1921-2017) and his mother, Queen Helen (nee Princess Helen of Greece and Denmark, 1901-1962), are seen disembarking from a train at Victoria Station in London, following their expulsion from Communist-dominated Romania in December 1947. The image captures a moment of profound loss and uncertainty, as the royal family, dressed in elegant coats and hats, step onto British soil, leaving behind their homeland and the throne. King Michael I, who had ascended to the Romanian throne at the age of 19 following the abdication of his father, King Carol II, in 1940, was deposed by the Communist regime just three years after the end of World War II. The monarchy was seen as a symbol of the old order, and the new Communist government, under the leadership of Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej, sought to establish a more radical, Soviet-style regime. The image of the exiled royal family, accompanied by their entourage, is a powerful reminder of the tumultuous political upheavals of the post-war period, and the displacement and dislocation experienced by many Europeans during this time. Queen Helen, who had been born in Athens, Greece, and was the daughter of King Constantine I of Greece, had been living in exile with her husband and children since the end of the war, following the German invasion of Greece in 1941. The family's arrival in London marked the beginning of a new chapter in their lives, one filled with uncertainty and hope for the future. The photograph, taken by an unknown photographer for the Mary Evans / Photo Union Collection, is a poignant and evocative portrait of a moment in history, capturing the dignity and resilience of a royal family in the face of adversity. The image is a testament to the enduring power of photography to capture and preserve the human experience, and to remind us of the complex and often tumultuous history of the 20th century.
