EDITORS COMMENTS
Evariste Galois: The Tragic Genius of French Mathematics This evocative portrait captures the enigmatic and brilliant young mind of Evariste Galois, a French mathematician whose groundbreaking work in algebra and number theory left an indelible mark on the world of mathematics, despite his untimely death at the age of just 20. Born in Paris in 1811, Galois showed exceptional mathematical ability from an early age. By the time he was 16, he had already made significant strides in the field of algebraic equations, challenging the established theories of his time. However, his unconventional ideas and rebellious nature earned him few allies among the academic community. In 1831, Galois became embroiled in a bitter feud with Auguste Adolphe Blanc, a fellow mathematician and editor of a scientific journal. The dispute escalated into a duel, which took place on May 30, 1832. Galois was mortally wounded and died the following day. Despite his tragic end, Galois's mathematical legacy lived on. His work on group theory and the theory of algebraic equations laid the foundations for modern algebra and number theory. Today, he is remembered as one of the greatest mathematicians in history, whose brilliance was cut short by the passions and rivalries of his time. This portrait, taken from the Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the life of this remarkable young man, whose brief but brilliant career continues to inspire and challenge mathematicians around the world.
