EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the excitement and tension of the 1882-83 Football Association Challenge Cup Final between Eton Vs Blackburn Olympic. The FA Cup, the oldest domestic football competition in the world, was in its infancy at the time, and this match marked a significant moment in the annals of English football history. The Old Etonians, a team composed primarily of former students of the prestigious Eton College, were considered one of the leading amateur sides in England. They had reached the final after a series of impressive victories, including a 1-0 win over Clapham Rovers in the semi-final. Blackburn Olympic, on the other hand, were a professional team hailing from the industrial town of Blackburn in Lancashire. They had also had a successful run to the final, defeating Stoke in the semi-final with a scoreline of 2-1. The final match took place on March 18, 1883, at the Kennington Oval in London. The photograph shows the teams lining up for the kick-off, with the Old Etonians in their traditional blue and white stripes and Blackburn Olympic in their red and white shirts. The atmosphere is electric, with a large crowd of spectators gathered around the pitch, eagerly anticipating the start of the game. Despite the Old Etonians' reputation as one of the best amateur sides in the country, they were ultimately defeated by Blackburn Olympic, who won the match 2-1. The victory marked a significant moment in the history of English football, as it was the first time a professional team had won the FA Cup. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the past, providing a window into the early days of English football and the evolution of the game from an amateur pastime to a professional sport. It is a reminder of the rich history and tradition of the FA Cup and the excitement and passion that surrounds it to this day.
