EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic entrance to Tregothnan lodge gate and house, nestled near Tresillian Bridge in Cornwall around 1925. In the foreground, we see Major Arthur William Gill's car, a testament to the era. Tregothnan has been a cherished home for the Boscawen family since an impressive lineage dating back to 1334. The house itself was rebuilt by Edward Boscawen (1787-1841), who held the titles of fourth Viscount and First Earl of Falmouth. It stands proudly near the site where its predecessor once stood. What sets Tregothnan apart is its expansive historic garden, which holds distinction as Cornwall's largest. Each year, for one weekend only, this hidden gem opens its doors to welcome curious visitors from far and wide. The glass lantern slide that immortalizes this scene was part of Major Arthur William Gill's lecture titled "Some Historic Cornish Beauty Spots". A true Cornishman and passionate amateur photographer, Gill gained recognition throughout Cornwall and beyond during the 1920s and 1930s for his presentations featuring both still images and cine film. What makes these quarter plate slides truly remarkable is that they were hand-painted by Gill himself with vibrant colors, adding an extra layer of artistry to his already stunning photographs. This particular image serves as a window into history, showcasing not just architectural beauty but also preserving moments in time through Major Arthur William Gill's lens.
