EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time to the 1840s in rural England, where the daily routine of dairy farming unfolds in this photograph from Mary Evans Picture Library. The scene takes place in a traditional milking parlour, where the soothing sounds of cows being milked fill the air. The milking shed, with its red brick walls and thatched roof, exudes a sense of history and tradition. Milkmaids, dressed in their simple yet practical garments, are hard at work. Their faces are focused, their hands deftly guiding the udders of the cows as they squat beside them. The cows, with their large, dark eyes and heavy, drooping udders, seem almost human in their patience and submission to the milking process. The milking stools, with their high backs and wide seats, provide some comfort for the milkmaids as they spend hours each day in this position. The milking parlour was an essential part of English dairy farming during this era. Cows were brought in from the pasture to be milked twice a day, in the morning and evening. The milk was then transported to the dairy, where it was churned and turned into butter or cheese. The milkmaids played a crucial role in this process, ensuring that the milk was of the highest quality. Despite the idyllic setting, the conditions for milkmaids were often harsh. Long hours, cold temperatures, and the risk of contracting diseases from the cows made milking a challenging and physically demanding job. However, the close bond between the milkmaids and the cows, as well as the satisfaction of producing fresh milk, made it a rewarding one. This photograph offers a glimpse into a bygone era, when the rhythm of rural life was dictated by the seasons and the needs of the farm. It is a reminder of the rich history of English farming and the essential role that milkmaids played in the production of milk and dairy products.
