Elisabeth, born in 1837 in Munich, Germany, was the wife of her own cousin, Franz Joseph I of Austria. Their marriage took place in 1854, and Elisabeth became the Empress Consort of Austria-Hungary at the age of just 16. Elisabeth was known for her independent spirit and love of the outdoors. Here, she is seen in her element, dressed in a riding habit and holding a riding crop, as she takes part in a hunting excursion during her visit to England. The photograph captures the grace and poise of the Empress as she rides her horse with ease and confidence. Despite her role as the Empress, Elisabeth longed for freedom and privacy.
