This striking portrait captures Elizabeth, Countess of Shrewsbury, also known as Bess of Hardwick, in the later years of her life. Born in 1518, Bess rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most powerful and influential women in Tudor England. She was married four times, her third husband being the Earl of Shrewsbury, from whom she took her title. The most intriguing chapter in Bess's life came when she was entrusted with the custody of Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1569. Mary, the former Queen of France and Queen of Scotland, had been imprisoned in England following her involvement in various plots against Queen Elizabeth I. Bess, who was a close friend and confidante of Queen Elizabeth, was chosen to keep Mary at Hardwick Hall, her grand estate in Derbyshire. Bess's role as Mary's keeper was not an easy one. Mary was a potential claimant to the English throne, and there were frequent plots and intrigues to free her and put her on the throne. Bess, however, remained loyal to Queen Elizabeth and managed to keep Mary in custody for over 14 years, until Mary's execution in 1587. Bess was not only a shrewd and capable administrator but also a generous benefactress. She founded Chatsworth House, one of England's most famous stately homes, and endowed schools and hospitals. Her autograph, seen at the bottom right of the portrait, is a testament to her literacy and education, which were unusual for women of her time. This portrait, dated 1608, provides a fascinating glimpse into the life of one of the most remarkable women of Tudor England. Bess of Hardwick's story is a testament to her strength, intelligence, and resilience in a time of political intrigue and uncertainty.
