EDITORS COMMENTS
Elissa Landi: Austrian-born Film Actress and Leading Lady of the 1930s This postcard image features Elissa Landi, an Austrian-born actress who rose to prominence as a leading lady in Hollywood films during the 1930s. Born in Vienna, Austria, in 1904, Landi began her acting career on the stage before making the transition to film. She quickly gained notice for her striking beauty and versatile acting abilities, and was soon cast in a series of high-profile productions. One of Landi's earliest and most memorable roles was in the 1927 silent film "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse," in which she starred alongside Rudolph Valentino. The film was a critical and commercial success, and helped establish Landi as a major talent in Hollywood. Over the next decade, she appeared in a number of other successful films, including "The Love Parade" (1929), "The Smiling Lieutenant" (1931), and "The Secret of Madame Blanche" (1933). Despite her success in Hollywood, Landi's personal life was marked by tragedy. In 1931, her husband, actor-director George Fitzmaurice, was killed in a car accident. Landi was devastated by the loss, and retired from acting for several years to focus on raising her two young children. She returned to the screen in the late 1930s, but her film career never fully recovered from the setback. After retiring from acting, Landi lived a quiet life in Europe, where she died in 1948 at the age of 44. Today, she is remembered as a talented and beautiful actress who left an indelible mark on the history of Hollywood. This postcard image captures Landi in her prime, a reminder of the brilliance and allure of a bygone era in film history.
