This exquisite photograph captures Elisabeth of Wied, the enchanting wife of Carol I, the first King of Romania. Born on December 24, 1843, in Neuwied, Prussia, Elisabeth was the daughter of Prince Frederick of Prussia and Princess Maria Anna of Anhalt. In 1869, she married Carol I, who had recently been proclaimed the first King of a united Romania. Elisabeth's elegant and refined style is on full display in this stunning portrait, taken in 1916. The velvet fabric of her dress, rich in texture and depth, contrasts beautifully with the delicate lace overlay, creating an intricate and visually captivating ensemble. The red hue of the dress adds a sense of passion and intensity to the image, while the subtle details of the lacework reveal a meticulous attention to fashion and design. As Queen of Romania, Elisabeth was known for her dedication to the arts and her commitment to charitable causes. She founded the Society for the Protection of Animals in 1895, and was also an avid patron of the arts, supporting the development of Romania's cultural institutions. Despite her many accomplishments, Elisabeth's life was not without tragedy. Her only son, Crown Prince Ferdinand, died in 1927, leaving her a widow. She continued to serve as Queen Regent until her own death in 1916, at the age of 72.
