This exquisite photograph captures Elisabeth of Wied, the enchanting wife of Carol I, the first King of Romania. Born on December 24, 1843, in Neuwied, Prussia, Elisabeth was the daughter of Prince Frederick of Prussia and Princess Maria Anna of Anhalt. In 1869, she married Carol I, who had recently been proclaimed the first King of a united Romania. Elisabeth's elegant and refined style is on full display in this stunning portrait, taken in 1916.
