EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: The Black Prince, Edward, Prince of Wales (1330-1376) This evocative portrait depicts Edward, the eldest son of King Edward III of England, who was famously known as the Black Prince due to his dark hair and his military victories. Born in Woodstock Palace on June 15, 1330, Edward was the eldest of thirteen children of King Edward III and Queen Philippa of Hainault. Edward's military prowess was evident from an early age. He was only fifteen when he led the English forces to a decisive victory against the French at the Battle of Crécy in 1346. This battle marked a turning point in the Hundred Years War, and Edward's reputation as a brilliant military commander was established. The Black Prince continued to lead the English forces in various battles against the French, including the Battle of Poitiers in 1356, where he captured the French king, John II, and took the French crown of gold, known as the "Sword of State," as a prize. Edward's military successes earned him the title "Prince of Wales" and made him a hero to the English people. Despite his military accomplishments, Edward's personal life was marked by tragedy. He lost his mother, Queen Philippa, in 1369, and his father, King Edward III, in 1377. Edward himself died on August 8, 1376, at the age of forty-six, leaving behind a legacy as one of England's greatest military commanders and a key figure in the Hundred Years War. This striking portrait, likely created in the late 15th or early 16th century, captures the intensity and strength of the Black Prince, a man who left an indelible mark on English history. The vertical composition and the use of rich colors and intricate details add to the portrait's visual appeal and historical significance.
