This photograph captures Edward VII, the King-Emperor of the British Empire from 1901 to 1910, in an unexpected yet elegant attire. Taken in 1910, the year of his death, the image shows Edward, also known as Bertie or Algy, dressed in a frock coat and the garter of the Most Noble Order of the Garter. The Order of the Garter is the oldest and most senior British chivalric order, founded by Edward III in 1348. Edward's decision to wear the garter in this manner was a nod to his role as the Grand Master of the Order, as well as a playful tribute to his wife, Queen Alexandra, who was the first woman to be made a member of the Order in 1897. The garter itself, adorned with the royal crest, is worn around his neck, symbolizing his commitment to the Order and its values.
